FABRUARY! Below is the Music Vice A-Z of the best concerts in Toronto this Feb. The groundhog said it’s going to be an early spring and judging by the way the concert calendar is hotting up, I agree! As ever, we’ve gone through the gig listings with a fine-tooth comb, so all the dates below can be considered safe bets.

This month’s top pick is Other Lives. The Stillwater, Oklahoma band play the Drake this month as part of their headline Eastern US/Canada tour before joining Radiohead on their US tour.

Britain’s Los Campesinos play two nights at Lee’s Palace this January

Happy New Year, dear readers! New year, new music… and just three years left to wait until we all get hoverboards.

While so many bands hide away in their parent’s basements during the bleak winter months to write forlorn songs and get back in touch with themselves, a few dedicated musicians are out playing shows. Some slim pickings for this month, but everything you see in Shows To Go To is a safe bet. Below is the Music Vice A-Z of the best concerts in Toronto this January…

Anamanaguchi @ Wrongbar, 21 January. $10. “Anamanaguchi are a four-piece group from New York City that combines guitars with the thick, electronic tones of a Nintendo Entertainment System.” Let’s hope they’re Super.
The Box Tiger with Elos Arma and Inlet Sound @ Supermarket, 12 January. $5. Fun fact: The Box Tiger were the very first guests on our podcast Radio Wunderbar. Go see them if you haven’t already.
Caveman with Hospitality and Volcano Playground @ The Horseshoe Tavern, 11 January. $10.
The Creepshow with The Dreadnoughts @ The Opera House, Saturday 7 January. $15 advance, $18 door. A hometown show from our local faves with the ghoulish vibes.
Dada Life @ The Hoxton, 19 January. $20. Move over dubstep, house is in the house to be the new fad for 2012.
Lamb of God @ The Phoenix, 27 January. $31.75. Well, if you like that sort of thing.

Fucked Up will play David Comes To Life in it’s entirety at a benefit concert five days before Christmas

Ho-ho-hold on to your toques, Toronto, December is here! December means the start of the Winter hibernation time for most cold-fearing musicians (we can’t all afford fancy Canada Goose jackets), but as ever in Toronto there is still live music to be found every night of the year. The pickings for December are slim but there are still some great shows to look forward to. Highlights this month include a double-header of benefit concerts at The Great Hall headlined by Fucked Up and Sloan on 20 and 21 December respectively in support of COUNTERfit Harm Reduction Program and the Barriere Lake Legal Defense Fund. And we’re not generally fans of stadium shows, but if you can get a ticket then The National at ACC should be good. And wait, following Dub Trio last month more decent dubstep hits Toronto, as local boys Zeds Dead play Kool Haus. Below is our A-Z of recommended shows this December:

Dub Trio – surfing their way into Toronto this month, playing the Garrison on Friday 4 November

Movember, ahoy! Get your upper lip fuzz in order and take a gander at our guide to this month’s hot concert picks in Toronto. This is the Music Vice pre-screened run-down to the best gigs in Canada’s music capital. This month’s featured artist is Dub Trio; a Brookyln, NY band who have worked with both Mike Patton and Matisyahu, and who just released their new album IV on 25 October. M83 – “We Own The Sky”:

Ron Sexsmith is one of many musicians set to play at Foodstock

Warner Music Canada artist and 2011 Polaris Prize nominee Ron Sexsmith is one of many musicians who are uniting to perform at a concert protesting plans for construction of  a mega-quarry in Ontario. Foodstock is taking place on Sunday, 16 October at Honeywood; a small farming community north of Orangeville, Ontario. Sexsmith will provide some of the musical fare at Foodstock, as more than 80 of Canada’s top chefs cook up a storm for an anticipated gathering of over 20,000 hungry people.

Other artists standing up to rock against the quarry include Cuff The Duke, Sarah Harmer and country musician Jim Cuddy. “Happy to lend a hand to people who are trying to preserve the sanctity of water and arable land,” says Jim Cuddy. “If a little music can help open some peoples’ eyes to the risks we are facing up here then I consider myself lucky to be able to help.”

The complete artist line-up includes Ron Sexsmith, Tom Barlow, Cuff The Duke, Hayden, Jim Cuddy, Sarah Harmer, The Loon Choir together with a string of buskers and other musicians.

Foodstock is a pay-what-you-can event. Buses are being organised to transport volunteers and attendees from Toronto, and a ride can be booked for $10 - details here. Car pools are also being arranged.

Toronto Public Library are gearing up to “Make Some Noise” this weekend with the latest in their series of free concerts at the library. Hooded Fang will play at Sanderson Branch, 327 Bathurst Street on Saturday, 1 October at 2pm.

Hooded Fang recently released their second album Tosta Mista in July. Check out the video for “Brahma” from the latest record:

The free library show will serve as a taster and warm-up for Hooded Fang’s forthcoming Fall tour with Cuff The Duke in October and November. Full dates are listed below.

There will be another “Make Some Noise” feature at the Toronto library the following weekend with a screening of The Mighty Uke at High Park Branch on 8 October. The film makers will be present to talk about the film and conduct a hands-on ukulele workshop. Uke fans, be there.

WEDNESDAY JUNE 15th
Library Voices, The Rivoli 12AM- An 8-piece band of trans-Canadian nomads originally from Regina, Saskatchewan. Would be interested in seeing the oft-talked about pop ensemble.
Parlovr, The Legendary Horseshoe Tavern 12 AM- High octane, rock fueled pop act from Montreal.
Pick a Piper, The Garrison 1 AM- A great live band, and a Radio Wunderbar favourite. Live this band is raw, ambient, percussive, and a lot louder than they are on album.

The Damn Truth, The Dakota Tavern 12 AM-  Soulful rock and rollers from Montreal, influenced by the likes of Hendrix and Joplin. See them now before their first LP drops to maximize on the band’s “I was listening before they got famous” appeal.
We Are Wolves, The Horseshoe Tavern 1 AM- Smoking hot act off the Dare To Care label, Montreal. Sure to bring the dance party, a show to be scene at.

Bruce Peninsula, The Rivoli 1 AM- A few years ago, when the LP had just been released, Bruce Peninsula used to play around town quite often. They’ve been a repeat act for me. Interesting fact, the large, ever-evolving choral band actually used to be boast Austra’s Maya Postepski on drums.
Imaginary Cities, The Rivoli 11 PM- It’s true, “Hummingbird” has got to have the dumbest lyrics ever. But that Marti’s got a voice you got to hear to believe.
PS I Love You, The Horseshoe Tavern 11 PM- Known for running in the same circles as local queer dance hit, Diamond Rings. This duo plays a surprisingly danceable blend of rock and pop.
Suuns, The Horseshoe Tavern 12 PM- An enigma from Montreal, Suuns are psychedelic burn-out rock for the synthesized generation.

FRIDAY JUNE 17th
Anti-Flag, The Phoenix 9 PM- Legendary, need I say more?
The Braids, The Garrison 11PM- Already hyped to be one of the hottest bands of 2011.
Diamond Rings, Yonge and Dundas Square 7:30 PM- A free show at the square from one of the hottest new dance acts in Toronto. Saw him play a live acoustic set as part of the Toronto Public Library’s “Make Some Noise” series, and I have to hand it to the guy – he’s really got it.
Dum Dum Girls, Lee’s Palace 11 PM- The cool retro vibe of this band revisits the sounds of the 60’s. The most astonishing part of this act is hearing the clarity of the girl’s very beautiful voices cut through the lo-fi fuzz live.
Hotcha! The Central 8 PM- Well admittedly, still a little rough, Hotcha’s old timey charm is hard to deny.
The Minotaurs, The Gladstone 10 PM- An afrobeat inspired band from Ontario. Frontman Nathan Lawr’s resume reads like a who’s who of indie rock.
Sheezer, Sneaky Dee’s 2 AM- Okay, I’ll admit it. I want to see the all-girls Weezer cover band.
Stars, Yonge and Dundas Square 9:30-11 PM- The Friday night headliner of the free set at Yonge and Dundas Square. Be sure to get there early if you want to party it up like a proletariat.

SATURDAY JUNE 18th
CATL, Silver Dollar Room 9 PM- Toronto’s favourite cowpunks, doing live conversions weekly.
Chad VanGaalen, The Great Hall 12 PM- Hand’s down, one of my favourite artists to emerge from Canada in the past five years. He’s at least as electrifying live as on album. A great chance to check out the new material the album that just dropped.
DEVO, Yonge and Dundas Square 9:30-11 PM- How do you try to outdo a free performance in the Square by Iggy Pop? Hire Devo the next year. Should be good.
Grimes, The Great Hall 1 AM- Her music is hard to put in a box, but the arty electro-pop will be a good follow-up to Chad VanGaalen who will be taking stage just prior.
Hands and Teeth, Sneaky Dees 11 PM- This band which has been together for barely a year was one of our favourites at CMW.
One Hundred Dollars, The Horseshoe Tavern 1 AM- A country band with true grit. Eat your heart out Billy Ray.

SUNDAY JUNE 19th

NXNE Soccer, Lamport Stadium at 1.30pm. The 5th Annual “Put The Boot In” charity match pits musicians against media and celebrities to raise money for the charity Right To Play. Nurse your NXNE weekend hangover by watching the likes of Brendan Canning (Broken Social Scene), Rick Campanelli (ET Canada) and Olympian Alex Van Koeverden scrap it out at footy – and our own Brian Banks will be there too! Toronto Comic Art Festival (TCAF) featuring Jeffrey Lewis
Anti-folk musician (Rough Trade) and comic book artist Jeffrey Lewis will be taking part in this year’s Toronto Comic Art Festival. Lewis will be selling his comic books in person at a table at the Small Press Room, while also being one of the participants for “Carousel”, a live comic book slide-show/reading at TCAF on Sunday 8 May from 4pm to 5pm. Additionally, Jeffrey Lewis will also be playing a show at The Dakota Tavern later on Sunday night. 8pm door time, tickets $10.

TCAF 2011 takes place on Saturday 7 May from 9am to 5pm and Sunday 8 May from 11am to 5pm at Toronto Reference Library, 789 Yonge St. Admission is free!

Protest The Hero – one of our picks of Canadian Music Week 2011

Canadian Music Week is here! Which also means Canadian Music Fest is here! Yes, essentially two names for the same thing but don’t be confused.. “CMW” is what most people on the streets of Toronto will be calling it as from Wednesday 9 March until Sunday 13 March a reported 800 artists [who's keeping score in the CMW versus NXNE who-can-get-the-most-bands battle? what next, 900?!] will play in 55 venues across the city. Brilliant.

Canadian Music Fest Battleplan

So, how do you make the most of all this music? First off, if you plan to go out every night of the festival then go buy yourself a wristband here – saving $8 or $10 cover at the door of every venue will mean that the wristband will soon pay for itself. (Or if you’re “with the band” or have some awesome music biz friends then you should have already done whatever it takes to blag yourself a free wristband or pass… if you didn’t, then it’s too late now.)

Once you’ve got your wristband the next step is to decide on you’re strategy for the week. You essentially have two strategies which we have outlined below as Plan A and Plan B. Music Vice will have a total of five writers and photographers at Canadian Music Week 2011 – four of which will be using the Plan A option, whereas myself, the editor, will be going with Plan B. Choose your own path:

Plan A – Be a nerd. Make a chart. Plan lots.
This is a very common but totally nerdy festival strategy. Here is the step-by-step guide for the plan-what-to-see approach to Canadian Music Fest 2011.
How to do it:
* Visit canadianmusicfest.com and spend hours researching and planning what bands you would like to see
* Get a piece of paper and draw out a festival week-planner chart with all the set times and locations of the bands you’d like to see
* Laminate your chart and keep it in your pocket – better still, tie it around your neck for maximum music festival geek points
*Stick to your plan to military precision and finish the festival with a smug sense of satisfaction with the knowledge that all your forward planning paid-off big time as you got to see a gazillion great bands and still had time for bed-time cocoa and marshmallows each night

Plan B – Don’t plan at all! Be rock and roll and go with the flow!

Who needs a plan? It’s a music festival… what’s to plan? I personally never have the time or thought to plan out my week at music festivals. At most I pick one or two must-see bands on any night that but other than that I will just bounce from venue to venue and make the most of the luxury of having access to any show thanks to the magic pass/wristband. Just follow your ears and stop when you find something that you dig.

How to do it:
* Grab your pass/wristband and go!

So Plan B is what what I’ll be doing – below are a few of my nightly picks but other than that I’ll be going from venue to venue taking in all the music that I can and hopefully discovering a few new favourite bands.

Wednesday 9 March – Berlin Brides (Greece) at Neutral, 1AM – Greco-Deutsch Europop kitsch. They were fantastic at Indie Week 2010 last Autumn in Toronto. Definitely worth staying up until 1am on a Wedneday night for. They also play at midnight on Friday at the Painted Lady and on Sunday they will be my guest on Radio Wunderbar, this Sunday 13 March live at 5pm EST on Indie Love radio.

Thursday 10 March – Billy The Kid (Canada) at Dakota Tavern, 11pm – If you haven’t seen or heard about Billy The Kid yet, then now is your chance. Never heard anyone say a bad word about her shows. Too mellow? Alternatively, check out the Experimental Metal Showcase with the line-up including Hunter City Madness and Crooked Valentine, two good heavy bands.

Friday 11 March – Protest The Hero (Canada) at Bovine Sex Club, midnight – A safe bet if ever I saw one. Bovine will be rammed so good luck getting in for this one. I’ll be warming up for Protest by checking out J Mascis (Dinosaur Jr.) at The Great Hall (11pm) who will perform his first solo acoustic gig in Canada. Friday night is the busy night – alternatively I also recommend Toronto’s Pick A Piper at Rancho Relaxo, 10pm or Lee’s Palace where the line-up includes British band Bombay Bicycle Club who we have covered before in the UK -  worth a look if British indie is your thing.

Saturday 12 March – The Fucked Up DJ set at Parts & Labour. Mike Halichuch and Jonah Falco spin girl groups and soul… could be the best option for a CMW chill-down/dance festival weekend-ender.

Next Saturday, 4 December, a benefit concert is taking place at The Piston in Toronto to raise money for Spacemen 3 drummer Natty Brooker. The Perfect Transcription – A Spacemen 3 & Spiritualized party will be a night of space rock and psychedelic tunes played by a clutch of Toronto bands together with some “very special guests”.  All profits from this gig will go to Natty Brooker himself.

Cover charge for the show will be Pay What You Can donations. A selection of artwork by Natty Brooker will also be on sale at the gig.

Sounds like a great gig and of course, a worthy cause. We rarely publicize individual gigs but this one is definitely one of our recommended Shows To Go To for December. Details from the press release are included below.

On Saturday, December 4th 2010 at The Piston (937 Bloor W.) members of Toronto’s shoe-gaze/space rock/psych-rock and folk music scenes will come together for a very special live musical tribute to underground music pioneers: SPACEMEN 3 & SPIRITUALIZED

The event, titled: THE PERFECT TRANSCRIPTION (a play on the title of a Spacemen 3 LP called The Perfect Prescription) is not just your average music tribute show though. This show has a very special purpose, and that purpose is to help support an important contributing member (both musically and visually) of both Spacemen 3 & Spiritualized named NATTY BROOKER, who is very ill and struggling to get by.

Natty Brooker, was the original drummer for Spacemen 3, and was also the artist responsible for much of the bands artwork and overall aesthetic. Natty introduced founding members Pete Kember and Jason Pierce (aka Jason Spaceman and Sonic Boom) to blues and gospel music (a major influence on their respective sounds); he played drums on the first Spacemen 3 album Sound of Confusion; and also appeared on the classic demos release Taking Drugs to Make Music to Take Drugs To.

It was also Natty’s iconic Devil and Angel original artwork design that adorned the first Spiritualized album cover “Lazer Guided Melodies”, and it was his endlessly recurring threes that graced the last Spacemen 3 album “Recurring”.

Sadly, Natty has been diagnosed with terminal cancer and has been unable to work due to his illness, and those nonexistent Spacemen 3 music royalties just don’t pay his bills (which is a sad reality for many underground or “critically acclaimed” musicians/artists who are stricken with debilitating illnesses).

So… seeing that many of Toronto’s shoe-gaze/space-rock/psych-rock and folk musicians claim Spacemen 3 & Spiritualized as a major musical influence… The idea to enlist their help in performing at this important tribute benefit show for Natty came quite easily for show organisers: Davy Love (DJ and founder of Blowup and Spacemen 3 Spiritualized fan) and good friend: Will Carruthers (former bass player for Spacemen 3/Spiritualized).

In addition to the live music element… this event will also celebrate the fantastic, mind-bending artwork of Natty Brooker.  Will Carruthers has arranged to have some of Natty’s famous artwork adorn the walls of The Piston as he did at galleries in Los Angeles, London, Sheffield, Berlin, and New York over the past 6 months.

Will has even arranged for some very limited edition, signed and numbered prints of Natty’s work including the iconic Angels & Devil, and Recurring 3’s to be shipped from the UK, and sold at this event.

As hinted at during the recent run of Australian Revival tour dates, Music Vice favourite Chuck Ragan has announced that he and his recently united band of Floridian cohorts will be returning to Australian shores to wreak havoc in December of this year. Accompanying HWM on these dates will be New Jersey’s favourite pop/street/bike punks Bouncing Souls. In the words of The Vandals’ Joe Escalante, “Everyone loves the Bouncing Souls!”, so this looks to be a fun run of shows indeed, to which we are very much looking forward.
