Green Day have announced today via their website and social media channels that Billie Joe Armstrong is seeking treatment for substance abuse.

Billie Joe is seeking treatment for substance abuse.  We would like everyone to know that our set was not cut short by Clear Channel and to apologize to those we offended at the iHeartRadio Festival in Las Vegas.  We regretfully must postpone some of our upcoming promotional appearances. – GreenDay.com

The news comes following Billie Joe’s onstage tirade at iHeart Radio Music Festival on Friday, where he stopped playing “Basket Case” mid-song after being incensed by a sign from the show’s producers telling him that he only had 1 minute left on stage. Billie Joe launched a verbal attack from the stage before smashing his guitar and walking off with the rest of the band.

It’s unclear what Armstrong is receiving treatment for. The onstage breakdown at iHeart was out of character for the seasoned punk rock veteran who is usually a jovial and lively performer.

Green Day are set to release the first of three new albums since 2009’s 21st Century Breakdown this Tuesday, 25th September, when Uno hits the stores.
