Against Me! singer Tom Gabel has revealed she is transgender and plans to begin living as a woman under the name Laura Jane Grace.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, Tom reveals how he has been privately living with gender dysphoria for years. She will soon begin the process of transition, by taking hormones and undergoing electrolysis treatments.

Laura Jane Grace will remain married to her wife Heather who has been fully supportive. “For me, the most terrifying thing about this was how she would accept the news, but she’s been super-amazing and understanding.”

Looking back at the lyrics to “The Ocean” from Against Me’s 2007 album New Wave, Tom Gabel wrote about wishing to be born a woman:

And if I could have chosen, I would have been born a woman
My mother once told me she would have named me Laura
I’d grow up to be strong and beautiful like her

We wish Laura and her wife Heather happiness and peace.

Which is to say one’s identity isn’t always attached to what lies between one’s legs but so often what lies between one’s mind…

Punk all the way of course….
