Since the release of Tune Yards’ 2009 debut – lovingly described here on as “a tour de force in home recording” –  Merrill Garbus has moved from Montreal, Quebec to Oakland, California where she recorded her new album w h o k i l l, which just dropped in April on 4AD. Garbus has set off on a North American tour for the new record, with stops in Toronto and Montreal on 12 and 13 May respectively. Tickets for Toronto available at Collective Concerts.

Have no doubts, 2011 is Austra’s breakthrough year. Their deput LP Feel It Break drops on 19 May with Katie Stelmanis and co. set to launch the album with a hometown Toronto show on Thursday 16 May. The Toronto show is presented by Embrace with tickets available at the usual record stores. Full May dates below:

Toronto Comic Art Festival (TCAF) featuring Jeffrey Lewis
Anti-folk musician (Rough Trade) and comic book artist Jeffrey Lewis will be taking part in this year’s Toronto Comic Art Festival. Lewis will be selling his comic books in person at a table at the Small Press Room, while also being one of the participants for “Carousel”, a live comic book slide-show/reading at TCAF on Sunday 8 May from 4pm to 5pm. Additionally, Jeffrey Lewis will also be playing a show at The Dakota Tavern later on Sunday night. 8pm door time, tickets $10.

TCAF 2011 takes place on Saturday 7 May from 9am to 5pm and Sunday 8 May from 11am to 5pm at Toronto Reference Library, 789 Yonge St. Admission is free!
