This really isn’t a bad record at all. I was a bit wary of Kristofferson’s new record as his appeal is to those mostly over 50 and I’ve never heard a song of his I’ve liked.

Close to the Bone is very stripped down and simple like the title suggests, Kristofferson’s voice sounds frail and has an incredibly honest quality to it. It’s a mature record from a guy who seems to be reflecting on his past and what the future may hold.

The record holds a lot of the same qualities as Johnny Cash’s last records and you’ll completely agree with me when you hear it.

Some of the songs like Sister Sinead, The Wonder and Tell Me One More Time are utterly gorgeous and proves just why this guy has won three Grammy’s and is in the Country Music Hall of Fame.

The final song, the hidden bonus track I Hate Your Ugly Face, is introduced as being Kristofferson’s first whole song he ever wrote at 11. The lyrics end the album on a light note with excerpts including “I hate your ugly face, I see it every place” and “Your skin is tanned like leather, it looks just like a heffer”.

I hope some of you youngsters have the balls to try out a record with some real grit and maturity.
