One Word: Disappointing.
After his abysmal Halloween remake in 2007 and his direction of the equally terrible (bar Tom Waits) tribute to my favourite band, The Ramones I didn’t think I could salvage any love for the one known as Robert Zombie. You gotta give the guy credit though, he immerses himself in any project that comes his way and has a vast and varied repertoire behind him.
The claims surrounding this record is that it’s a return to form but I see it more as Ol’ Rob’s hope to create a record as good as the original one over a decade ago. Sure, it sounds the same and the production is pretty much exact but it lacks the same big, singalong tunes like Dragula, Living Dead Girl et all and just doesn’t carry the same amount of weight.
All in all it’s not a bad record at all, Sick Bubblegum isn’t bad and neither are Werewolf, Baby! and Cease to Exist but you just have to bear in mind this isn’t 1998 and only The Ramones could make 4 records that were just as good as each other.
