Who: Death Cab for Cutie
Where: Sony Centre for the Performing Arts, Toronto
When: Thursday, 7 May 2015
In One Word: Definitive
In support of their eighth studio album Kintsugi veteran indie rockers Death Cab for Cutie performed a nostalgic set list of both new and old favourites at last night’s show in Toronto.
Two new touring members Dave Depper and Zac Rae joined founding and long lasting members Ben Gibbard, Nick Harmer and Jason McGerr, since the recent departure of Chris Walla, yet were still able to capture the comforting charm that we have all grown to love.
Their masterful execution of their latest album left the audience engaged throughout Death Cab’s entire set list, riddled with the classics like “Soul Meets Body”, “Title and Registration” and a hauntingly beautiful acoustic rendition of “I Will Follow You into the Dark” – which left audience members both in complete silence and an eruption of adulation.
The beautifully lit backdrop at the Sony Theatre of the Performing Arts, displayed the Kintsugi album cover, with accompanying bursts which rhythmically matched the soundscape.
Commencing the evening with a track off their latest album ‘No Room in Frame’, Gibbard’s meek sentimental tones carried through quite pleasingly, though much of the album’s influence was based on his recent divorce from New Girl’s star Zooey Deschanel.
Although it seemed as if the band would end the show with melodic seven minute “I Will Possess Your Heart”, they returned for a definitive four song encore which ended with the harmonious “Transatlanticism” that had the entire audience on their feet singing along.
If every band managed to perform as Death Cab for Cutie does with the upmost respect and appreciation to their devoted fans; which includes the exceptional lineup of both their new and timeless, treasured favourites, the world of music would be a much cheerful place.
