The Gig: The Vaccines
Where: The Forum, Tunbridge Wells
When: 21 February 2011
In One Word: Euphoric
There is a buzz around Tunbridge Wells and that buzz comes in the form of a band who are going to change everything. The Vaccines’ gig was originally scheduled to happen in January around the time of the Forum’s 18th birthday celebrations but due to frontman Justin Young, who was formerly known as folk singer Jay Jay Pistolet, having to recover from a throat operation before the gig (cue the shit jokes about him needing a vaccination) and was rescheduled to February 21.
After being hotly tipped in almost all of the ‘Sound of 2011’ polls at the end of last year the band came on stage at 10:20 to a packed venue eager to see what all the fuss was about and kicked off with “Wolf Pack” from their debut album What Did You Expect From The Vaccines?
Granted that the set was barely half an hour long, but what a half hour it was.
By the time the 84 second wonder that is “Wreckin’ Bar (Ra Ra Ra) was played the gig was kicked into another gear sending the audience into a frenzy. “If You Wanna” and “Blow It Up” were next which would surely enough ensure that the entire audience would be come fully-fledged fans.
I have to say that they are by no means re-inventing the wheel here but the reason I like The Vaccines is that it is proper guitar music, its fun and its great. If finally this year, guitar music makes a comeback, judging by the audience at the Forum it won’t be the kids buying the music – I was the youngest there by some way!
A half an hour set just wasn’t enough for me and I was yearning for more.
Set-list – The Vaccines played:
“We Are Happening”
“Post Break Up Sex”
“All In White”
“Under Your Thumb”
“A Lack of Understanding”
“If You Wanna”
“Blow It Up”
