Album Review: The Poor - Round 1
The Poor play what Australians always do right - hard and simple rock n' roll, from the opening scream of Kill my Faith you know what these guys are all about and they're here for a good time and the only deep aspect here I'd reckon is physical rather than lyrical. Death of Me is a slower but just as rockin' tune, they know exactly what they're doing and who their influences are, maybe there's just a bit too much Bon Scott in here but it's pretty much acceptable. Last Laugh has a great big sing-along chorus that will sound brilliant in a live enviroment and House actually sounds like Soundgarden or something from the 90's - these guys have a bit of variety and this House is probably one of the strongest songs on the record. The rest of the album does much and such the same, switching between high voltage rock n' roll a la AC/DC and melodic grunge like Faith No More or the aforementioned Soundgarden, why the latter part of the release is dedicated to demos though I'm not entirely sure. Even if The Poor aren't showing us anything new this is still a very promising release and with a lot of hard work on the road I'm certain they'll shift a shitload. I for one will definitely go and see these guys, and if they're half as good live as on record you're in for a good night and that's what bands like The Poor are all about. © Danny Crombie
